Research

My current research work focuses on the challenges posed by next generation data centers, both in terms of Hardware and Software. I'm a member of the High Performance Computing Group at the Computer Architecture Department (DAC) in the UPC. I'm also an associate researcher at the Autonomic Systems and eBusiness Platforms research line in the Barcelona Supercomputer Center (BSC). The line's goal is to understand and to create the core of future large-scale Autonomic Middleware.

Research focus

  1. Multi-tier Web Services: QoS management, dynamic placement, service virtualization, multi-tier architectures

  2. MapReduce Workloads: QoS, workload management, energy and performance tradeoff

  3. NoSQL systems: high-level data management, data placement

  4. Computer architectures: hybrid data centers, hardware accelerators, dedicated architectures, interconnection networks, new uses for HPC systems

David Carrera received the MS degree at the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC) in 2002 and his PhD from the same university in 2008. He is an associate professor at the Computer Architecture Department of the UPC. He is also an associate researcher in the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) within the “Autonomic Systems and eBusiness Platforms” research line.

His research interests are focused on the performance management of data center workloads. He was a summer intern at IBM Watson (Hawthorne, NY) in 2006, and a Visiting Research Scholar at IBM Watson (Yorktown, NY) in 2012. He has been involved in several EU and industrial research projects. He received an IBM Faculty Award in 2010. He is an IEEE member.
